Description:

HAND-DRAWN MAP OF SANTA ROSA ISLAND
A hand-drawn map, 10 x 8.5 in., depicting the Union-held Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island and the immediate surrounding area. Though a bit simplistic, the map reveals much information about the situation at the time it was made. It is shown that the fort is defended by 1,000 men under the command of Col. Harvey Brown, the schooner ‘Binghampton' and the U.S.S. Water Witch are stationed nearby in the Gulf, and rebel camps positioned all over the island as well as near Fort McRee and Fort Barrancas. Above Santa Rosa is a floating wreck noted to have been ‘sunk by the Rebels'. The top left reads ‘Note – It is reported that the Rebels have 100 guns in battery' and at the bottom left, between Fort McRee and the ship channel there is a notation: ‘Position I shall take in the event of an attack'. There is no indication of who drew this map but due to the positions of the Confederate forces we can determine it was created in 1861 in preparation for the Battle of Santa Rosa Island. On Oct. 9, 1861, Brig. Gen. Richard Anderson of the Confederate Army landed on the north beach and surprised the soldiers at Camp Brown. Despite this, Col. Brown managed to overtake the rebels with his reinforcements, and they returned to the mainland. The Union lost 14 men that day while the Confederates lost approx. 30-40 men. A few minimal toned areas throughout, else very good.
