650. WADE HAMPTON II (1791-1858) Planter, father of Confederate General Wade Hampton. A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Millwood, Aug. 21, 1842 to Col. Richard Singleton concerning plantation management. He writes in part: "Frazier, the temporary overseer at the Big Lake is sick, so soon as he gets well enough to move, I shall give him a walking ticket. Amongst other applicants for his situation, is a Mr Buk a Brother of your man at True Blue... They are now engaged in putting Fodder, which by the by, has been much injured, by a hail storm, which passed over the vast part of the plantation... The cotton is but little injured by it... Your cotton crop is a very fine one, & if no disaster... you will make as much as can be picked out in season to prepare for another crop. the corn is not as good as it ought to have been, having suffered by drought..." Small loss from seal tear affects several words of text. Usual folds, light uneven toning, otherwise very good. $100-150
