Description:

GREGORY "PAPPY' BOYINGTON AND MASAJIRO KAWATO
A nice pair of items from two famed World War II pilots, includes: GREGORY "PAPPY" BOYINGTON (1912 - 1988), American military aviator with 28 "kills", his "Black Sheep" squadron harassed Japanese forces in the Solomons late in the war. His personal check drawn on the Central Bank of Sunnyside, CA, June 15, 1984, fully engrossed and signed by Boyington in bright blue marker, ordering a $489.98 payment to "Bank of America". Stamp cancels, else fine. Along with MASAJIRO "MIKE" KAWATO (b. 1925), famed Japanese Zero pilot who claimed to have shot down Boyington and his Corsair in Rabaul on Jan. 3, 1944, when Boyington disappeared, but later his tale was determined to be a fabrication. His bold signature, executed in Japanese on a large card. Two pieces, fine condition, and an excellent association.
