Good lot of four items signed by notable figures of the "golden age" of aviation, includes: RICHARD E. BYRD (1888 - 1957) American aviator and explorer, first to fly over the South Pole and established the base "Little America". Signature "R.E. Byrd" in black ink on a 3 1/4" x 1 1/2" slip of paper affixed to the half-title page of his memoir "Skyward", (New York: Blue Ribbon Books), 1937, 359pp. 8vo. Shows some chips to the original dust jacket and some toning to the pages, else very good. WITH: RUTH R. NICHOLS (1901-1960), pioneering American aviator, the only woman yet to hold simultaneous world records for speed, altitude, and distance for a female pilot. Good association signed and inscribed book, her memoir "Wings for Life", (Philadelphia: J.P. Lippincott Company), 1957, first edition, 317pp. 8vo. Nichols signs in blue ink on the front flyleaf, adding the dedication: "To Peggy Norris, NY-NJ governor of the 99's. With appreciation & best wishes for her fine leadership and piloting ability." The original dust jacket shows some chips and foxing, else very good. The Ninety-Nines are an international organization that provides networking, mentoring, and flight scholarship opportunities to recreational and professional female pilots, founded in 1929 and with notable aviators including Nichols, Amelia Earhart, Ruth Elder and Opal Kunz counted among its charter members. WITH: BERNT BALCHEN (1899 - 1973) Pioneer polar aviator, navigator, aircraft mechanical engineer and military leader. Signed and inscribed book, Balchen's autobiography "Come North With Me", (New York: E.P. Dutton & Co.), 1958, 318pp. 8vo. Balchen signs on the front flyleaf in black ink, adding the dedication "Inscribed to Kenneth Norton with best wishes..." and the date "Sept 19 1958". Shows minor bumps to the corners, else very good. WITH: DOUGLAS CORRIGAN (1907-1995) "Wrong-Way Corrigan", American aviator of the Thirties who set out in his plane promising to fly west to California and ended up making a trans-Atlantic crossing. His minor miscalculation brought him national fame. Good content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], to "August", responding to his correspondent's suggestions for an aerial acrobatic routine, in full: "Your idea is all right only [American barnstormer] Clyde Pangborn did fly a standard with a fellow on his lead doing a loop - also it's been done by [fellow barnstormer] Art Gobel and several others - besides the gov't authorities won;t allow it any more. Sorry..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. The letter has been encased in glass and shows foxing overall, else very good. Sold with Corrigan's memoir "That's My Story" (New York; E.P. Dutton & Co.), 1938, 221pp. 8vo.
