Description:

Good lot of three items signed by notable Soviet Arctic explorers and political officials, includes: PYOTR SHIRSHOV (1905-1953), People's Commissar and later Minister of the Maritime Fleet, participated in Arctic expeditions aboard icebreakers and the drift station "North Pole-1". His research on plankton demonstrated the viability of life in the high latitudes of the Arctic Ocean. Typed D.S. in Cyrillic, 1p. 4to., Moscow, Aug. 25, 1943, untranslated but apparently addressing the repairs of Soviet warships in U.S. ports. Shirshov signs at the conclusion in black pencil. Shows several other period pencil inscriptions and file holes at the left edge, else very good. WITH: OTTO SCHMIDT (1891-1956), member of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR and deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, supervised the expedition to establish the Arctic drift station "North Pole-1" and its later evacuation. Typed D.S. in Cyrillic, 1p. 4to., Moscow, March 21, 1941, untranslated but regarding business of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Schmidt signs at the conclusion in violet ink. Shows an additional ink inscription, slight toning and file holes at the left edge, else very good. WITH: ILYA MAZURUK (1906-1989), aviator with the "North Pole-1" expedition, for which he was named Hero of the Soviet Union, and later head of the "Glavsevmorput" Polar Aviation Directorate. Typed D.S. in Cyrillic, 1p. 4to., May 10, 1942, untranslated but apparently regarding the purchase of equipment from the U.S. Mazuruk signs at the conclusion in violet. Shows additional period inscriptions, file holes at the left edge and minor chips and toning, else very good. Three pieces.
