Description:

216. GETTYSBURG SURGICALLY-REMOVED IRON SHARDS A chilling collection from a Gettysburg dealer, about 33 surgically-removed iron slivers and shard contained within a glass-covered 9th plate size case (2 3/4" x 2 1/2") and on a second small sheet pinned to the other half of the case. The glass case bears within a label reading: "Fragments of a Nail / Removed from Foot" with other labels indicating several dates when various pieces were removed from the poor sufferer's limb. The shards measure from 1/4" to 1" and are all quite thin - it's impossible for us to determine how they might have ended up in the victim's foot. From the number of shards present and the fact that they resemble a larger item which has shattered, it is entirely possible that these nasty relics were the remains of some type of projectile or small shell. A fine addition to an early medical collection. 250 - 350
