Description:

GERRY ADAMS
(b. 1948) Irish Republican politician, president of Sinn Fein and an important figure in the Northern Ireland peace process. Fine association item showing a connection between Leonard and Kathy Boudin of the Weather Underground and Gerry Adams, an original soft cover paperback edition of his book Falls Memories, Brandon Books, Kerry, Ireland, 1983, 144pp. inscribed on the title page: "To Leonard from Gerry Adams, Belfast, 1983". Leonard Boudin was a prominent civil liberties activist and attorney who represented the likes of Daniel Ellsberg, Benjamin Spock, Fidel Castro and Paul Robeson. Kathy Boudin was a former American radical and revolutionary connected to the highly controversial Weather Underground Movement. It has long been rumored that the IRA was the recipient of funds that were collected in the United States and later funneled to Northern Ireland by members of the Weather Underground. It was suggested that these funds were secured through a series of armored car robberies which took place between 1977-1981. When this book was signed, Kathy Boudin was already in jail awaiting trial for her participation in the 1981 Brinks robbery. Subsequently, she would plead guilty (in 1984) in return for a 22-year prison sentence. On July 26, 1990, Leonard Boudin was the lead council in the case of Gerry Adams v. James Baker, Secretary of State; Richard Thornburgh, Attorney General; and Alan C. Nelson, Director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service - whereby Adams was appealing a decision by the United States Government which denied him entry into the country, citing his "alleged advocacy of and personal involvement with terrorist violence". The above signed book was acquired directly from Kathy Boudin by a well-known New York City book dealer. With a very scarce issue of Rights! (March - April 1990), a publication by the National Emergency Civil Liberties Committee. The issue features Leonard Boudin on the cover and contains many articles pertaining to his death and his legacy. Two pieces, fine.
