Description:

Prior to the 19th century, the Chinese were concerned that European trade and missionary activity would upset the order of the empire. Strictly controlled and subject to import tariffs, European traders were limited to operating in Canton and Macao. Following a series of military defeats against Britain and France, Qing China were slowly forced to permit extraterritorial privileges for foreign nationals and even cessions of Chinese sovereignty over certain ports and mineral rights. Foreign trade was approved there for the British and French by the 1860 Peking Convention. Between 1895 and 1900, these two powers were joined by Japan, Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, Italy and Belgium – countries without concessions elsewhere in China – in establishing self-contained concessions each with their own prisons, schools, barracks, and hospitals. Offered here is a photo album, 11 x 13 in., consisting of 118 personal and commercial b/w photographs of varying sizes, many accompanied by a caption in German. Locales for the owner of this album varied, including China, Japan, Fiji, and Africa. Images include: S.M.S. Emden; sailors undertaking target practice on deck; group photos of the men; villages; soldiers posing with local women; temples; shared meals in a local home; the men enjoying leisure time at a beach; Chinese rebel recruits in Wuchang; an injured Chinese soldier being carried away; several dead bodies laid next to each other; mountain ranges; farmers hard at work; views from the water of Wuhan and Xinjiang; a beached ship; the slaughtering of a cow; and group and individual photos of locals from both Fiji and Africa, along with stunning nature shots of the jungles and beaches. The front cover has torn away and is no longer present. The back cover is in red lacquer but is significantly chipped. Although the album itself is not in good condition the photos within remain unaffected.
