Description:

GERMAN SOLDIER'S PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM FROM CHINA
In 1897 Germany leapt at the chance to expand their influence after the murders of two German missionaries in what became known as the Juye Incident. China was forced to agree to the Kiautschou Bay concession granting Germany Chinese territory on a 99-year lease, resulting in among other things the building of the city and port of Tsingtao. Offered in this lot is a photo album, 9 x 11 in., belonging to a German soldier during his service in Tsingtao (or Tsingtau), China. The black lacquered front cover features an inlaid design of a bird flying above flowers and the city name: 'TSINGTAU CHINA'. Within are 109 photographs, a few commercial prints, the smallest 4 x 3 in. but most 4 x 6 in. and larger. Images include the album owner's artillery unit deployed with mounted cavalry in mountainous territory; the men in their quarters in Kiautschou; large masses of German sailors and soldiers on the march and in the field; battle scenes including a harbor burning, sunken ships, barricades, dead Chinese, a blown bridge, etc.; Samoan women; German warships, and an athletic competition ashore; etc. Covers a bit loose but still attached, overall very good.
