Description:

GERMAN FASCHINENMESSER SHORT SWORD
A pre-unification or early Imperial German short sword, likely Prussian, of the pattern commonly called ‘faschinenmesser' (fascine knife) and given the collector's designation M1864. The sword, 19 in. blade, 23.75 in. overall, features a slightly-curved, single edged steel blade, unmarked but showing acid-etched decorations on both sides and along the spine, depicting floral motifs and stands of arms. The single-piece brass hilt features an S-shaped crossguard, a bird's-head pommel and grooves on one side of the grip only, also unmarked. The blade shows slight damage to the tip, scratches overall and patches of stable oxidation, while the hilt shows a nice patina with expected wear and small dings overall. The sword is housed in a 20.5 inch long black leather scabbard, with brass throat and chape, again unmarked. The chape shows some verdigris and is loose, with expected wear to the leather and an appropriate patina to the brass fittings. The leather also appears to have shrunk with age, as the scabbard is somewhat too short for the sword. In very good condition overall. In very good condition overall.
