Description:

GARDE JAGER HIRSCHFANGER SHORT SWORD BY CLEMEN & JUNG
Imperial German ‘Hirschfanger'-style short sword, 19.5 in. blade, 24.25 in. overall, of the style worn by members of the Regiment Garde du Corps Jagers, the hunters corps of the Kaiser's bodyguards. The sword, patterned after a typical German long-bladed hunting dagger, features a straight single-edged, dulled blade with a wide fuller, with the maker's name ‘Clemen & Jung Solingen' over their ‘Z' within a crowned shield mark on the ricasso. The single-piece brass hilt features short, straight quillons with a pommel in the form of a finely-detailed eagle's head, with the peened end of the tang continuing the feather pattern on the top of the head. The crossguard is marked with the regimental numeral ‘81.' The blade shows run marks with some light freckling, with some minor wear to the hilt, otherwise in very fine condition overall. The sword is housed in a 19.75 in. long black leather scabbard, with brass throat and chape and an acorn-shaped frog retention post, again unmarked. The scabbard shows expected wear to the leather and an appropriate patina to the brass fittings.
