Description:

(GERMAN-AMERICAN BUND) THE U.S. GOVERNMENT COMES FOR FRITZ KUHN
FRITZ KUHN (1896 - 1951) Controversial leader of the German American Bund, prior to World War II. A naturalized citizen of the United States, he was arrested as an enemy agent and held by the federal government at an internment camp in Crystal City, Texas. His citizenship was canceled on June 1, 1943 and he was deported to Germany. Good lot of letters and documents concerning efforts by the U.S. Government to prosecute Kuhn on a variety of charges. Included first is a T.L.S. on State Dept. letterhead, 2pp. 4to., July 28, 1939 advising Kuhn that if his activities require his registering as an agent of a foreign principal, he must do so and further asks that regardless, he advise if the Bund receives or gives monies to a foreign state or entity. The form, unengrossed, and the regulations are present. This law was promulgated specifically with the intention of destroying the Bund. In 1943, Kuhn would lose his citizenship on this very charge. WITH: an Aug. 7, 1939 letter from the counsel of the House Un-American Activities Committee ordering Kuhn to appear within ten days, along with the actual subpoena calling him to testify, signed by Speaker of the House WILLIAM B. BROADHEAD (1874-1940). It is sold with Kuhn's telegram reply asking for travel and hotel funds, an Aug. 10 letter to Kuhn promising to cover the requested expenses, and a telegram from the committee counsel telling Kuhn where and when to appear. There are also four 1941 letters from the New York Board of Parole to Kuhn's distraught wife, as well as six pages of clippings from 1938 taken Kuhn's own scrapbook, including a story on the infamous Madison Square Garden rally.
