Description:

34TH BOMB GROUP, 8TH AIR FORCE IDENTIFIED ESCAPE MAP
A great war relic, a two-sided rayon escape map approx. 28 in. square, identified to an 8th Air Force bomber pilot. The map typically shows no date of issuance or country, but it is ca. 1943-45. One side of the map shows central and southern France with the inset showing the German border with Switzerland, the line boldly marked in red. The other side of the map shows the section of France bordering the English Channel, and insets with similarly broad, red bordered boundaries between France and Spain at various places. The bottom of one side is marked in black ink: 'Alf M. Johnson 1st Lt. 4th Sq. 34th BG USAAF' Fine condition. The 34th Bomb Group entered combat in May 1944, helping with the preparation for the Normandy invasion by bombing airfields and coastal defenses in France. It continued to support ground forces as they moved eastwards. The group did not lose a single bomber to enemy fighter action over enemy territory. After V.E. day, they dropped food supplies into Holland and transported Allied prisoners of war out of Germany.
