Description:

A rare Third Reich sidearm, a "Fliegermesser" ("Flyer's Knife") issued to personnel of the "Deutscher Luftsportverband" ("German Air Sports Association"), or DLV, an organization established by the NSDAP to covertly train combat pilots while adhering to the limitations on air force personnel imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. The weapon, 6 3/4" blade, 12" overall, features a nickel-plated pommel and swept three-bar crossguard, securing a grip covered with finely-grained blue leather. A black enamel mobile swastika is inset into each side of the crossguard at center. The blade and crossguard are separated by a blue leather washer. The double-edge blade bears the "seated king" mark of Solingen maker SMF at the ricasso. The nickel plating of the pommel shows appreciable wear, while the crossguard shows just a few spots of slight wear. The grip wrapping shows a few small dings, with some light freckling to the blade in a few areas, else very good to fine. The knife is housed in an 8" long steel scabbard covered with blue leather matching the grip, and with nickel-plated drag and throat. It is suspended from a short brown leather hanger with a spring clasp, attached to a single ring at the throat. The top of the throat is stamped with the insignia of the DLV, intersecting the blade slot. The drag shows notable wear to the nickel finish, with somewhat less wear to the throat, and with a few small nicks to the leather.
