Description:

GEORGE S. PATTON, JR.
(1885 - 1945) "Old Blood and Guts" was one of the finest tank commanders in history, rolling his forces through Tunisia, Sicily, France and Germany until halted at the Rhine. Nice content A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Fort Riley, Kansas, Oct. 6, 1913. Patton, as First Master of the Sword in the Mounted Service School writes to his mother, in part: "...Sundays here are like Sheridan or a grave yard...I fear I will get fat I have in fact gained already. We have a brown house like the one at Sheridan...I have been painting it a little at a time...I started my instruction Thursday and gave two lessons with fair success so I hope it will be all right. So far I have been able to take the riding course with the class of course it does not amount to much yet just riding at a walk and trot and getting settled in the saddle. B. said you were coming East the 20 of Oct. and were going to stop by and see us. Riley is only three and a half hours from Kansas City on the Union Pacific. There is a station on the post. If there is not room for you all at the house there is a hotel in Junction City...You will not need any clothes here as it is perfectly dead just now and will be until the 13th Cav. comes back. There is a regiment of artillery here but they are of no use socially. My horses have not got here yet but should arrive this week...". Penned on light blue letterhead with original holograph envelope addressed to "Mrs. George S. Patton", very good condition.
