Description:

(GEORGE S. PATTON) BEATRICE AYER PATTON
(1886 - 1953) Wife of general George S. Patton. Scarce and good content A.L.S. 4pp. 4to., South Hamilton, Mass., Sept. 10, 1952 to Major Bell enclosing an "...answer to your request of the 24 March for an article on my husband's favorite books. I hope it is what you want. Our library is so big that it's hard to choose the highlights! I have never written an article for a military journal before, with the exception of book reviews. As I was writing this, it occurred to me that you could get a very fine article (not by me) on playing out the battles of this last war on the actual terrain just as our family has done with the battles of the past. When I was in Germany last year I tried to persuade several officers especially Col. C. W. Abrams, now at Carlisle, to take bus loads of officers and men on trips to the battlefields where they themselves fought and act out the battles. I believe that this would constitute the finest, most dramatic kind of instruction. I do not think it was ever done, at least in the way I picture. I believe that, if my husband were alive, he would make that an important part of the instruction of trips in Germany. Can't you see him doing it, and the response?...". Usual folds, extremely light toning at margins, else fine condition.
