Description:

(1924 - 2018) Forty-first President of the United States who ordered the attack on Iraq to liberate Kuwait. Fine content and association A.L.S. 'G B' written on a letter sent to him by prominent ambassador and Senator DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN (1927-2003) on his UN ambassador's letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Dec. 6 [1975]. Moynihan's initialed letter, lighthearted, mentions that he will see President Gerald Ford the following day and states: '...Is there anything you would like me to bring up about your operations? Otherwise I will simply tell him you seem to be settling in to the splendid misery of it all...' Bush, who had just been nominated to head the CIA, responds: 'Pat - nothing special. Try not to get me fires - He is low on the UN but let's not let it go down the tubes (though the [?] nations of the last 3 days are immune) No - I feel I'm getting good cooperation out of the Dept. especially Secstate. Good luck...' Fine. The day after this letter was written, Indonesia invaded East Timor. Perhaps the most controversial action of Moynihan's career was his response, as Ambassador to the UN, to the invasion. Moynihan ensured that the UN Security Council took no action and the invasion caused the deaths of 100,000–200,000 Timorese through violence, illness, and hunger. Later, he said he had defended a 'shameless' Cold War policy toward East Timor. Bush is clearly behind him, as apparent in this letter.
