(1815 - 1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. A.L.S. "Geo. G. Meade Maj. Genl." 2pp. 8vo. on "Headquarters Military Division of the Atlantic", Philadelphia, Sept. 11, 1871 to Major. T. J. Treadwell, the commander of the Hartford Arsenal, writing, in part: "...My Brig. Gen. J. W. Hofmann U.S. Vols is desirous of obtaining accurate information of what has been invented...for shell fuses, as he has himself invented a Fuse. Will you do me the favor of enlightening him on this point, & indicate where he can get any information you may not possess. In addition to the interest I feel sure you will take in Genl. Hoffmann's ideas... ". Usual folds, light toning on blank back leaf, else very good to fine condition.
