EDWARD MCPHERSON OF MCPHERSON'S FARM
(1830-1895) Pennsylvania merchant and member of Congress, best known for his farm at which a significant part of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg was fought. Rare war-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., "Hd. Qu. Army Penn Cham. 9 Sept. 17/62", to Col. Henry McCormick, Commander of the First Brigade. During the raging battle of Antietam, McPherson writes from Chambersburg giving instructions to the colonel of the home guard during the first Confederate invasion. In part: "...It is not necessary that you should draw and cook any additional rations for marching. You will for the present retain command of the detached companies to whom you refer. Details for two orderlies from the mounted troop for duty at your headquarters...". Slight loss at upper left corner, otherwise very good condition.
