GEORGE COMBE (1788 - 1858) British writer on phrenology who devoted himself to the promotion of phrenology, and of his views on education. Scarce A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Edinburgh, Oct. 5, 1821, to his publisher John, in part: "...Have heard through the medium of Dr. Darling & my friend Mr. James Bridges that you are a friend to the new Philosophy of Man. I use the freedom to send you a report of the Phrenological Society having the laws annexed, and beg to say that the Society will be happy to inscribe your name as a corresponding Member. The Editor of the new Edinburgh Review is a Member of the Society, and I have procured from him & now send you a copy of an Article on Phrenology which will appear in the October number. As you may have heard of my [phrenological] observation on D. Haggarts head... I beg to send you a copy of a small pamphlet on the subject......". Very good condition.
