(1826 - 1885) Union major general and general-in-chief of the army whose hesitation in attacking Confederate forces caused him to be sacked by Lincoln. GEORGE MCCLELLAN WRITES TO JEFFERSON DAVIS Fine association A.L.S. as Captain of the 1st U.S. Regiment of Cavalry, 3pp. 8vo., Philadelphia, June 9, 1856 to Secretary of War JEFFERSON DAVIS. Having returned from observing the Crimean War, McClellan advises that he has arrived in Philadelphia with his books and reference materials needed to complete his report. He notes: '...I have been constantly engaged in throwing my notes into shape, and translating...the Russian Regulations & Tactics, in regard to Cavalry and Infantry...to explain their system...it will be a long time before any consultation with the other members of the Commission can be of any advantage...For here...I can work 10 and 12 hours a day...my report will necessarily be a long one...' McClellan asks for an extension of time in Philadelphia, closing: '...there is every reason to cause me to desire to join my regiment....[but] I am anxious to neglect nothing...' Folds, else fine condition. McClellan was a favorite of Davis, and because of his connections, he received the assignment to be an official observer of the European armies in the Crimean War in 1855. Traveling widely, and interacting with the highest military commands and royal families, McClellan observed the siege of Sevastopol. His 1856 report contained a critical analysis of the siege and a lengthy description of the organization of the European armies. He also wrote a manual on cavalry tactics that was based on the Russian cavalry regulations he mentions here.
