GEN. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. WORLD WAR I DIARY TRANSCRIPT
Revealing T.Ms. (unsigned), 47pp. [n.p., n.d., ca. 1940], being then-Major Richardson's typed transcript of his diary entries from the time of his sailing with Gen. T. H. Barry to France on Dec. 1, 1917, his service as aide to Barry and observer with foreign armies, until completion of his mission on January 9, 1918. Richardson's very eloquent writing describes his arrival and brief stay in England, his movement to Boulogne and the front, description of artillery, intelligence, visiting 3rd Brigade, 1st Australian Div., description of a trench raid, "gas school", food and clothing supply, lunatics loosed by the Germans wandering the streets of Armentieres, a visit to the French front lines, a description of the men, morale, and supply in the French army, use of balloons, and a visit to shattered Verdun. Rust stains at top from paper clips, else very good. Sold with two news photos showing Pershing and the allied generals, each signed on the back by Richardson. Also included is a small quantity of unrelated correspondence from later in Richardson's military career.
