Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S OVERSIZED MAP OF EUROPEAN RUSSIA
Printed map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) titled: 'Ubersichtskarte Europaisches Russland' ('Overview Map of European Russia'), 34 x 25.5 in. (1: 3,300,000 scale), undated but apparently a pre-war or early war issue. The map, printed in German, shows European Russia in its entirety, from the Baltic Sea to the Caucasus and including borders with Finland, the Baltic States, and eastern Poland to the Ural foothills into parts of western Siberia. Other features include major rail infrastructure—critical for military planning, major roads, and urban centers with Moscow near the center of the map. Place names are in German transliterations of Russian names. This map is not heavily shaded for terrain but focuses largely on transport and settlements, consistent with operational planning needs. It is not a tactical battlefield map but may have served Halder as a strategic overview and could well have been used in planning Operation Barbarossa. The railway emphasis further informs our opinion that this map would have been part of the OKH/OKW intelligence and planning materials. Heavy folds with some tears at fold junctures and some marginal chipping but with no appreciable loss.
