Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE OPENING DAY OF 'OPERATION TYPHOON'
A very important hand-drawn situation map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) documenting the opening day of Operation Typhoon, the German drive on Moscow which commenced on Oct. 2, 1941. The map was executed using india ink, blue (representing German) indelible pencil and red (indicating Soviet lines) indelible pencil on coated map paper, 1p. 4to. in size. The drawing is titled: 'Skizze 4, den 2.10.41' ('Sketch 4, 2 October 1941'), drawn on a scale of 1:1,000,000 with a 0–7 km bar. The drawing depicts the wooded and marshy belt west of Yukhnov, centered on a string of hamlets and farmsteads: Gusarki (SW), Dampfmuhle (steam mill by the river bend), Slovoja/Slobova, Novo Mi. / Novo Ms., Legtshino, Vederniki, Gavrilovka, and Mikhailovka. Multiple blue arrows show converging German attacks from the southwest and west across the bridges near Dampfmuhle toward Slovoja and Legtshino/Vederniki. Infantry Regiment 215 is driving through the center; '195' is operating near the bridgehead and mill, and a flanking thrust marked '339' is at the western approach. Neighboring formations are noted at the edges. Soviet positions are shown around Gavrilovka, Mikhailovka, Legtshino, and along the Solosha stream. Small red squares mark strongpoints. Blue dashed lines and dots show fire lines and objectives around Novo Mi. and Legtshino - a street-to-street fight across several villages. This is essentially a regimental-level situation map for 2 October 1941—the opening day of Operation Typhoon in this sector. German infantry (centered on I.R. 215, with I.R. 195 close in support) attacks out of the Gusarki–Dampfmuhle bridgehead and pushes northeast through a cluster of hamlets, aiming to seize Legtshino and Vederniki while neighboring divisions (78th, 267th) secure the flanks. Soviet forces resist with local counter-thrusts from Gavrilovka/Mikhailovka and along the streams. Unlike a planning sketch, this shows who actually moved where on 2 Oct 1941, down to village blocks and bridge sites - a micro-history of the Moscow offensive's first day. Bridges, mills, marshes, etc. explain why Dampfmuhle, Novo Mi., and Legtshino became tactical hinges despite their small size. Fine condition.
