Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE FIRST WEEK OF OPERATION TYPHOON
Important hand-drawn situation map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) depicting actions of Infantry Reg. 215 in the opening week of the drive on Moscow, Oct. 9, 1941. The map was executed using india ink, along with blue ink (representing German lines) and red ink (indicating Soviet lines) on coated map paper, 1p. 4to. in size. The drawing is titled: 'Skizze 3 – I.R. 215 am 9.10.41' ('Sketch 3 – Infantry Regiment 215 on 9 October 1941', drawn on a scale of 1:150,000 with a 0–8 km bar at bottom. This simple hand-drawn war-date map depicts central Russia during the first week of Operation Typhoon, specifically the belt south of the Smolensk–Vyazma highway (labeled 'Autobahn' across the top, along with villages Rovnaya, Shilovo, Sarubeshye, Telyatkovo, Bessonovo, Dymskaya, Kurakino, Vysokoye, and the road square at Golostekovo/Afonovo on the approach to the Autobahn. A side road to Smolovo is shown to the southeast. A blue, northbound column marked '215' shows Infantry Regiment 215 attacking up the road from Rovnaya toward the Autobahn, with small rectangles and ticks for company and other strongpoint positions. Neighbor divisions are noted: '268. I.D.' at the southwest edge and '267. I.D.' near Smolovo. Red arrows and arcs at Golostekovo/Afonovo mark Soviet opposition astride the highway. Blue timings/figures (e.g.: '100/200/240') denote phases or checkpoints along the advance. This map is essentially a regimental-level situation map for 8–9 October 1941: I.R. 215 advances north along a string of villages to cut or reach the Smolensk–Vyazma highway, while adjacent German divisions (267th and 268th) secure the flanks. Soviet forces are holding or counterattacking at the last line of villages on the highway itself. It captures the infantry follow-through that accompanied the armored pincer with the 'Autobahn' road being the primary objective. This is a working document—evidence of how the regiment and division HQ understood the fight that day, not a polished retrospective map.
