Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE EAST SIDE OF THE KIEV ENCIRCLEMENT, I
Important hand-drawn situation map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) depicting combat activity east of Kiev during the disastrous encirclement of Russian forces near the city in late September, 1941. The map was executed using india ink, along with blue ink (representing German lines) and red ink (indicating Soviet lines) on coated map paper, 1p. 4to. in size. The drawing is titled: 'Skizze 2 – der 22. u. 23.9.41' ('Sketch 2 – (situation on) 22 and 23 September 1941'), drawn on a scale of 1:100,000 with a 0–6 km bar at bottom. This simple hand-drawn map depicts operations east of Kiev, specifically the Yahotyn–Berezan axis along the main road and rail lines towards Poltava. Towns and hamlets along the corridor include Berezan, Grabenka, Kulyabovka, Chesty, Privorniki, Yahotyn, Khmelevik, Kozlov, Studeniki, and Semenovka. A note at left reads 'v. Kiew 60 km' (i.e.: 60 km from Kyiv). The German 44. Infanterie-Division is shown north of the road, 45. Infanterie-Division at Yahotyn, and 134. Infanterie-Division to the south. Various infantry regiments and battalios are indicated as well. Their blue arrows show advances westward from Yahotyn and east–west along the road. Red Army resistance is shown astride the corridor, notably between Khmelevik and Yahotyn. Red dashed curves depict the contracting pocket to the west. Dated dashed lines '22.9.' and '23.9.' annotate where the Germans reached or fought on those dates. This divisional/corps situation map showing how German infantry and attached units were to cut the road network east of Kyiv by driving from Yahotyn toward Berezan, while neighboring divisions sealed the flanks. This is the eastern screen of the Kyiv encirclement in late September 1941, undertaken with the goal to block the Soviet retreat routes and help close the ring east of Kyiv. It captures the day-by-day push that sealed the Kyiv pocket from the east, a critical step in one of the war's largest encirclements. It shows textbook Kesselschlacht practice: infantry divisions fixing and compressing the pocket while mobile elements elsewhere completed the outer ring.
