Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE EAST SIDE OF THE KIEV ENCIRCLEMENT, II
Important hand-drawn situation map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) depicting combat activity east of Kiev during the disastrous encirclement of Russian forces near the city in late September, 1941. The map was executed using india ink, along with blue ink (representing German lines) and red ink (indicating Soviet lines) on coated map paper, 1p. 4to. in size. The drawing is titled: 'Skizze 3 – 24.–26.9.41' ('Sketch 3 – 24–26 September 1941'), drawn on a scale of 1:100,000 with a 0–6 km bar at bottom. This simple hand-drawn map depicts operations east of Kiev, following those shown on the map offered in the previous lot, Sep. 22-23, 1941. It shows the Yahotyn–Berezan corridor on the main road and rail line toward Poltava, along with the towns of Yahotyn (right), Chesty, Kulyabovka, Khmelevik, Semenovka, Kozlov, Studeniki, Grabenka, and Berezan, 60 km from Kiev. The German 44. Infanterie-Division is north of the road; 45. Infanterie-Division on the central axis around Yahotyn/Chesty; 134.Infanterie-Division operating on the southern shoulder, and other regiments and battalions are shown as well. A red dashed curve north of Yahotyn marks a Red Army retreat, and date tags '24.9'. and '25.9' mark specific actions/arrivals (e.g., pushes near IR 130 and the Berezan sector). The shading on Berezan and Grabenka denotes strongpoints or captured areas. This divisional/corps situation map tracks how the German infantry pressed from Yahotyn toward Berezan while sealing the eastern flanks of the encirclement. The German 45th Infantry Division - with IR 130/133/135 - push west from Yahotyn while 44th I.D. screens to the north and 134th I.D. compresses from the south. The objective is to cut Soviet escape routes on the Yahotyn–Berezan axis as the Kyiv pocket closes. This map further locks down the timing of the eastern closure, and illustrates that that controlling transport hubs - not sweeping terrain - was the key to trapping the Soviet forces. A rare, contemporaneous snapshot of a soon-to-be Red Army disaster.
