Description:

GEN. DAVID M. GREGG'S OFFICERS LIVE AMONG THE "GOOD REBELS"
Partial war-date Union officer's letter, 1 1/4p. 4to., written by Lt. Thomas J. Gregg, Co. F, 6th Pa. Cavalry (Rush's Lancers) as aide de camp on the staff of his brother Brig. Gen. David Mc. Gregg, [n.p., n.d., but Warrenton, Va., ca. Feb. 1864]. In part: "...Warrenton is quite a large town…Most of the people have remained (excepting the young men) perhaps there is no Northern town with so many young women…they are all good rebels. Frequently we make calls by invitation. They call us Yanks and in return we address them as rebs. Last evening Dave & I spent an hour or two at Mr. Bartow Epis. Minister here. He is a Northern man and his wife is from Rochester New York. They are splendid people and good for the Union…they live not more than a hundred yards from our quarters. It has become quite a home to us all. This is the first family that Dave has visited,,,in Virginia. We do not trouble ourselves about such people as Mrs. Gov. Smith & daughter though having a number of circumstances to call we have not troubled them as yet…are any of the young men of town enlisting…". Also included is a manuscript invitation addressed to Lt. Gregg, present as "Mr. Yank", Warrenton, Feb. 26, 1864, in part: "I will be most happy to see you and your friend this evening. It is always agreeable to see my Old Man." Very good.
