Description:

GEN. DAVID M. GREGG'S BROTHER VISITS THE WASHINGTON HOMESTEAD AFTER FREDERICKSBURG
War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. folio., written by the brother of Brig. Gen. David Mc. Gregg, Lt. Thomas J. Gregg, Co. F, 6th Pa. Cavalry (Rush's Lancers), White Oak Church, [Va., n. d., but Jan. 3, 1863], in part: "…until day before yesterday the squadron was camped within twenty rods of Genl. Franklin's Hd. Quarters having acted as guard to him for two months…we were having too good times…so…the order came for Comp. 'F' to join the regiment. We are now a short distance from our old camp and about two miles from Fredericksburg…you are certainly wrong…that Harry weighs eighty pounds…I passed through Siegel's Corps…then camped at Stafford C. House but did not know of the 125th regiment being there…Dave [Brig. Gen. David M. Gregg] is but a short distance from here…on the Belle Plain road…I rode up his him and had a wild turkey dinner. He commands [George D.] Bayard's old Brigade, but is commanding a division acting Maj. Genl…Capt. Gregg and myself took a ride…we first rode over the old Washington Farm. The farm belonging to Washington's father you remember it in connection with that story…Washington and the cherry tree…it must have been a beautiful farm previous to the war, but it is now all cut up and destroyed. The old Washington house has been torn down. Part of the barn is still standing. It lays right opposite Fredericksburg. Until lately it was dangerous to venture too close the river bank. Theo. and I rode right along by the river opposite the city. Fredericksburgh is certainly a city of desolation, since the last fight the rebs have thrown up rifle pits the entire length of the first street running parallel with the river…few persons are to be seen in the streets…this morning our old Capt. [Robert Milligan] resigned. We have Capt. Davis in place…". Minor fold splits, else fine.
