GEN. ALBERT C. WEDEMEYER REPORTS ON THE CHINESE
ALBERT C. WEDEMEYER (1896 - 1989) United States Army Commander who served in Asia during World War II and was an important member of the War Planning Board that formulated plans for the D-Day invasion. Good content T.L.S. 'A. C. Wedemeyer' on his Commanding General, United States Forces China Theater' letterhead, 1p. 4to., [China?], June 11, 1946. In part: '...I am glad that you enjoyed my talk, even though 'off the record' I am sure that you understand it is not always possible to express oneself frankly to so large a group. I have tried to be objective in my analyses in problems presented in the Far East. Further, I find it necessary to check myself continually, for we Americans, when we clearly see the goal to be attained are prone to impetuously strive for a quick accomplishment. The Chinese philosophy of life introduces so many Machiavellian maneuvers without regard to the time element. The Americans are prone to become frustrated or disgusted. I am sure that some progress has been made but there remains much to be done and we must accept that continued progress will be made in a cadence much slower than that of an efficient American. I enjoyed the inclosures very much particularly the Chinese-American Alliance of 1908. If you should visit China, I would be happy to have you...' Marginal tape stains, else very good. In July 1947, President Harry S. Truman sent Wedemeyer to China and Korea to examine the 'political, economic, psychological and military situations.' The result was the Wedemeyer Report in which Wedemeyer stressed the need for intensive United States training of and assistance to the Nationalist armies. Truman, not convinced, cut back aide to the Nationalists drastically.
