Description:

GEN. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER CORRESPONDENCE WITH ALBERT WEDEMEYER (8)
CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888 - 1972) American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. Great lot of eight letters between Huebner and Lieutenant General ALBERT C. WEDEMEYER (1897-1989), Chiang Kai-shek's Chief of Staff from 1944 to 1945, commanding all American forces in China during that period, and Truman's Army Chief of Plans and Operations in the postwar period. All sent from 1948 to 1949, many marked 'CONFIDENTIAL'. Three such letters bear Wedemeyer's signature. Notably includes: great content A.L.S. 'Al' from Wedemeyer on Chief of Staff letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington D.C., Aug. 29, 1949, sent shortly after Wedemeyer left the Army Chief of Plans and Operations, reading in part: '...I have been assigned to the Sixth Army to relieve Mark Clark...glad to get away from the Washington atmosphere. I have never been on the team of New Deal admirers, either politically or militarily...I worry considerably about the policies that our New Deal leaders have adopted for Europe and the Far East...Of course, Ralph, I am a soldier...if it is my responsibility to carry them out, there will be no hesitancy. As Chief Army Planner, it was my duty to express views...apparently such views are not in accord with those of people in authority.' WITH: great content A.L.S 'Al' from Wedemeyer, 3pp. 4to, Sept. 3, 1948, marked 'CONFIDENTIAL' at the top, regarding the Moscow Conference in Berlin, in part: '...still do feel that...giving up the concept of quadripartite control is unsound...Psychologically, the people of Germany and of our own country, will contribute a breakdown or failure in the whole Berlin-Germany problem to the military...You and I understand that the international crises that are occurring in various areas of the globe are due to stupidities and/or unscrupulous dealings on the part of our leaders three or four years ago...'. (To this point, Huebner replies in a separate letter: 'I agree with you thoroughly on your Berlin conviction. Only God knows what will come of it.') Many other letters mention Wedemeyer's son, who appears to have served under Huebner. File holes at the top, else very good to fine.
