GEN. RUDOLF TOUSSAINT IS AWARDED CROWN OF ROMANIA WITH SWORDS (5)
RUDOLF TOUSSAINT (1891–1968) German general of Infantry Army officer. Toussaint saw action in both World Wars. During World War II he served as a military attache in the German embassy in Rome. In September 1943, he became commissioner of the German army in Italy. On 26 July 1944, he was replaced by SS-Obergruppenführer Karl Wolff and became commissioner of the German army in the office of the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, while simultaneously holding the position of Commander of the Military District of Bohemia and Moravia. As such he was the last Nazi commander of Prague. An excellent grouping of documents, includes MICHAEL I (1921-2017), the last King of Romania, reigning from 20 July 1927 to 8 June 1930 and again from 6 September 1940 until his forced abdication on 30 December 1947, led the coup against pro-Nazi Antonescu. War-date D.S. as monarch, 1p. sm. folio, Sinaia, Nov.3, 1942, the award of the Crown of Romania with Swords to Toussaint, in Grand Officer class, (2nd Class), in fine condition. The document is co-signed by CONSTANTIN PANTAZI (1888-1948), Romanian army general and Minister of Defense from January 23, 1942 to August 23, 1944 . He was one of the most loyal followers of former General Ion Antonescu . For war crimes he was demoted and sentenced to death, a sentence that was commuted to life imprisonment. Sold with another medal given Toussaint, the Crown of Romania with Swords in Officer Class (4th Class), in very fine condition with all enamel and gilding in place, the ribbon slightly worn. WITH: OTTO MEISSNER (1880-1953) Nazi Nuremberg defendant who served as Reichsminister and Minister of the Presidential Chancellery, a partly-printed D.S., 1p. sm. folio, Berlin, Jan. 28, 1942, official permission for Toussaint to wear the foreign medal upon his uniform; WITH: a 5 x 7 in. b/w period Romania press photo showing Michael I awarding the medal to Toussaint; WITH: a D.S., 1p. 8vo., [Berlin], Sep. 1, 1943, an award of the War Merit Cross, 1st Class with Swords to Toussaint, signed in facsimile by Wilhelm Keitel. Five pieces, all in very good to fine condition.
