821. RICHARD J. GATLING (1818 - 1903) American businessman and inventor of the precursor of the machine gun, the Gatling gun. His invention was used with great effect during the Civil War, and in some forms is still in use today. Scarce, early D.S. "R. J. Gatling", 1p. legal folio, Marion, Ohio, October, 1857, a legal document concerning a civil action between Gatling and Martin Robbins in which it appears that an agent of Robbins is illegally holding a sum of money due to Gatling.
