Description:

GABRIEL C. WHARTON
(1824-1906) Confederate brigade general who commanded troops in the Shenandoah Valley, principally at New Market and Waynesboro. Rare war-date A.E.S. penned on the verso of a L.S. by Lt. Col. J. LYLE CLARK of the 30th Va., 1p., 4to., "Camp near Giles Courthouse", Jan. 13, 1863 to Maj. CHARLES S. STRINGFELLOW . Clarke asks that in light of the fact that a potential quartermaster had declined his appointment, a commissary of subsistence be appointed in his stead. On the verso, Wharton writes: "Respectfully for'd G. C. Wharton Col.". Beneath Wharton's endorsement, Stringfellow writes an A.E.S. as A.A.G. on behalf of Maj. Gen. Sam Jones mentioning that another quartermaster would likely be appointed. Near fine condition.
