(1730 - 1794) American Revolutionary general who reported to Washington at Valley Forge to undertake the training of troops, later led Continental Army forces at Monmouth and Yorktown. His war-date franking signature on an 8vo. address panel, addressed in his hand to "Brigadier General [Mordecai] Gist Baltimore" adding "on public service" at top right. Docketed at bottom "Baron Steuben 25 Nov. 1780". Soiled at usual folds, some contemporary ink smudge affects Steuben's signature, else very good. Matted and framed with a portrait of von Steuben.
