Description:

69. JOHN C. FREMONT (1813-1890) "The Pathfinder", explorer of the western frontier and Union army major general until sacked by Lincoln for his efforts to garner more power. Scare, good content war-date L.S. "J. C. Fremont Maj. Genl. Commdg" on "Head Quarters, Western department" letterhead, 1p. 4to., St. Louis, Sep. 11, 1861, to "Maj. George E. Waring, Fremont Hussars" advising per a special order dated Sep. 9, 1861, Union Gen. Alexander Asboth had been ordered: "...to organize a combined Brigade and in pursuance of Authority in said order...has selected...the First Regiment of Western Cavalry 'Fremont Hussars'. You are therefore directed to report to General Asboth with your command..." Dampstained at center fold, else generally very good. The Western Department existed only until Oct. 9, 1861 when it was merged with the Dept. of the Missouri. Prior to that, Fremont was removed from command for his "emancipation order", hence his letters on this letterhead are rare. Waring went on to serve with distinction at Pea Ridge. $500-600
