Description:

FREDERICK W. BENTEEN (1834 - 1898) American army officer, a captain in Custer's 7th Cavalry who was ordered by Custer to patrol an area near the Indian's village during the battle at Little Big Horn. During the action, Benteen relieved Reno's forces which were under attack, the two groups holding out until relieved by forces under Terry. Partial D.S. "F. W. Benteen" as Captain in the 7th Cavalry, the bottom portion of a document (complete in itself), 1p. 12mo., Fort Rice, Dakota Territory, June 17, 1878, a receipt for uniform clothing including forage caps, trousers, shoes, boots, etc., boldly signed at conclusion, very good.
