Description:

FREDERIC REMINGTON
(1861 - 1909) American painter, illustrator and artist remembered for his works based on western themes, most notably his sculpture Broncho Buster and his paintings Last Stand and A Dash For the Timber. Fine original pencil sketch on a 7" x 4 1/2" sheet showing a group of soldiers charging up a hill, captioned by Remington: "The attack on the camp. Johnson charging the infantry up hill". On the verso Remington wrote a page of notes on the scene, in part: "...Cavalry skirmishing on horseback - Infantry lying [in] rifle pits overlooking camps. Soldiers going at top speed - horse fell, then the mare over his head - lit on his feet - put foot in stirrups and got on...". Two tiny chips in margin, light toning, else very good. Remington was no doubt referring to Lt. Johnson and the 10th Cavalry in Arizona. Remington's depiction of Johnson's fight with Indians appeared in Harper's Weekly on Dec. 22, 1888.
