Description:

FRANZ VON PAPEN
(1879-1969) Chancellor of Germany and Vice Chancellor in Hitler's early years of power, von Papen was accused and later acquitted of war crimes. Fine content T.L.S. 2pp. 4to., New York, Apr. 29, 1912, as military attaché to the German Ambassador to the United States, to the editor of the Army and Navy Journal. Von Papen writes a scathing letter attacking the magazine for supporting English reports accusing the officers of the Austro-Hungarian army of played around while the enlisted men bore the brunt of the major World War I 133-day Siege of Przemysl, Poland. In part: "...The Army and Navy Journal of April 24th contains under the caption 'Conditions at Przemysl' a reprint of statements made by an English War Correspondent to the effect that the officers of the garrison of Przemysl shamefully neglected their duties and played cards and billiards instead of sharing the hardships of their men...I think I am justified in expressing my surprise that the...Journal which as a rule deals with facts only, has deviated so far from its usual course as to give credence to, and indirectly express its belief in the truth of, the statements of one of the many war correspondents who for the last nine months have been engaged in the contemptible work of scattering lies and malicious inventions throughout the world. A careful perusal of the daily press should have convinced the Editor that the man who is quoted is one of the worst offenders in this respect, and that he has been especially active in disseminating falsehoods...In the absence of my Colleague of the Austro-Hungarian Army, I consider it my duty to protest most emphatically...It is a wanton insult...". Ironically, at the time von Papen was committing sabotage against the U.S. and would return to Germany later that year in anticipation of charges. Second page 4to. sheet cut in half, wear and chipping to edges, a hole here and there, overall good condition.
