Description:

FRANZ HOFER
(1902 - 1975) Gauleiter of Tyrol who first suggested the creation of an Alpine "fortress" as the war wound down as Nazi Germany's last bastion. Hitler approved the idea 18 days before his suicide. Scarce T.L.S. on his NSDAP Gauleiter of Tyrol letterhead, 1p. large 4to., Jan. 16, 1939 to the Reichskommisar in Austria, JOSEF BURCKEL. Largely untranslated but referring to the "harmonization of laws", apparently as they concern labor laws, predicting dire consequences if his suggestions are ignored. Heavily annotated at bottom, possibly by JOSEF BURCKEL (1895-1944) Gauleiter of Vienna and Reichsstatthalter (governor) of the region from Jan. 30, 1939 to Aug. 7, 1940, who worked diligently to further unification with Germany, including promoting anti-Jewish decrees and seizing Jewish property. His extravagant lifestyle, financed through confiscated Jewish money and property, earned him the displeasure of the Nazi hierarchy and he was eventually removed from his post in Vienna.
