Description:

FRANZ HALDER'S DRAFT ANALYSIS OF ATTEMPTED SOVIET BREAKOUTS AT KIEV

FH73a

A historically important mimeographed D.S., 13pp. 4to., originating from the personal files of German General FRANZ HALDER (1884-1972), Chief of Staff of the German ‘Oberkommando des Heeres' (OKH), or Army High Command, from 1938 until his removal in 1942. The document was written in German and titled ‘Die Kampfe des Inf. Rgt. 130 zur Abwehr von russischen Ausbruchsversuchen aus dem Kessel oswarts Kiev im Septbr. 1941. Art der russischen Angriffe hierbei.' (‘The battles of Infantry Regiment 130 in defense against Russian breakout attempts from the Kiev pocket in September 1941. Type of Russian attacks during this period.') It was produced under Halder's direction immediately postwar for the U.S. Army Historical Division, and authored by Wehrmacht general FRITZ SCHLIEPER (1892-1977). The report is untranslated by us, but provides an analysis of failed Soviet attempts to break out of Kiev during the encirclement and eventual capture of that city through September, 1941. The analysis blends eyewitness experience, the regimental war diary, and two hand-drawn pencil map ‘skizze', or sketches. The presence of numerous handwritten emendations in ink and pencil, most likely in the hands of the authors, indicate that this was an early draft of the report predating its finalization and submittal to the U.S. Army. The report is signed by Schlieper at the conclusion in blue ink. Toned, unbound, otherwise in very good condition. Worthy of further research. The ‘Halder Group', consisting of over 700 German officers overseen by Halder, produced over 2,500 documents for the U.S. Army Historical Division, providing valuable military intelligence and analysis of the course of the war, and particularly the tactics utilized by the Red Army. These provided a vital resource guiding American military policy in response to the Soviet threat during the Cold War.
