Description:

FRANCIS W. PICKENS
(1805 - 1869) Confederate Governor of South Carolina who ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter. War-date A.E.S. penned on the verso of a letter to him by South Carolina Quartermaster General L. M. Hatch on very rare "Head Quarters Quartermaster General's Department" letterhead, Charleston, June 5, 1861 asking for more explicit instructions regarding an order he had received. On verso, Pickens endorses the letter: "Answered F. W. Pickens". Very good.
