Description:

FRANCIS SEYMOUR-CONWAY
(1743-1822) Second Marquess of Hertford, Lord Chamberlain to the Royal Household, and Chief secretary for Ireland. Fine content A.L.S. "Hertford", 2pp. 4to., London, April 1 [n.y.], informing his correspondent that he has been named executor of the will of GEORGE MACARTNEY (1737-1806) best known for his unsuccessful embassy to China in 1792, and his observation that Brtain's was " a vast Empire, on which the sun never sets". In part: '...My old friend has flattered me to the greatest degree by naming me as executor to his will in conjunction with your Grace. I was prepared for this mark of confidence by a communication he made me some years ago, and I shall be most happy to show my regard to his memory by undertaking and executing this trust in the best manner I can, but the clear state of his affairs with which I am not unacquainted will perhaps leave me no opportunity of shewing how ready I should be to encounter trouble in Lord Macartney's accounts..."Some ink erosion and show-through, else very good.
