Description:

FRANCIS C. BARLOW
(184 – 1896) Union brigadier general severely wounded at Antietam and again at Gettysburg, where his life was sheltered and saved by Confederate General John B. Gordon. War-date A.L.S. as Colonel of the 61st N.Y., 6pp. 8vo., ‘Camp at Fair Oaks', June 7, 1862 to New York Gov. Edwin D. Morgan. In part: ‘...At the late action at this place were killed Lt. Col. Moffett, Captain Theo. Russell...I respectfully recommend the following promotions to fill the places thus left vacant...' Barlow then lists the names of thirteen men he seeks to have promoted, in some cases emphasizing their leadership qualities most emphatically, closing with his request that the promotions be made as soon as possible: ‘...We are upon the eve of another battle with no Field Officers and only 8 Company Officers. I have therefore been obliged to make the Regt. into 8 Companies, even to get one officer for a Company. The killed and wounded in battle (4 of each) the absent sick, and the vacancies, render us so short of officers...' Light toning, otherwise very good.
