Description:

War-date document bearing the signatures of four Union generals. Included is: JOHN A. RAWLINS (1831-1869) Union brigadier general and Grant's staff officer and principal advisor, he rose through the ranks with Grant and eventually became his Secretary of War. A.E.S. on the verso of a fine association war-date A.L.S. on State of New York letterhead, 1p. 4to., Albany, New York, Jan. 25, 1865, sent to Gen. ULYSSES S. GRANT, asking his advice on filling vacancies in the 6th N.Y.H. Artillery of the Army of the James. On the verso Rawlins expresses that the Regiment has yet to serve with the Army long enough for general officers to know the officers well enough to speak of promotions. He goes on to state his belief that promotions should come from within the Regiment and that seniority should also be considered. These same sentiments are echoed in endorsements from the following, EDWARD O. C. ORD (1818-1883) Union major general severely wounded in the assault on Van Dorn at Corinth, also active at Vicksburg and Richmond, EDWARD FERRERO (1831-1899) Union general who led a Negro division in the assault upon the Crater at Petersburg resulting in heavy losses, and GEORGE F. SHEPLEY (1819-1878) Union brigadier general who led forces during the New Orleans campaign, and served as military governor of New Orleans. Tears at the mailing folds, some of which have been repaired. Overall, very good.
