Description:

FITZHUGH LEE
(1835 - 1905) Confederate major general and nephew of Robert E. Lee who directed troops in J. E. B. Stuart's ride around McClellan, and fought at Antietam and Gettysburg. He also cut his way out of Appomattox only to surrender two days later. Very fine, personal content war-date A.L.S. ‘Fitz Lee', 3pp. 8vo., ‘Hd. Qrs Fred[ricksburg]' Sep. 10, 1863, to Christian Elizabeth Price, mother of Maj. R. Channing Price, Stuart's adjutant, who was killed in action at Chancellorsville. In full: ‘Sometime since I had in my possession some official dispatches written by your darling boy a few hours previous to the reception of his fatal wound and which I put carefully aside thinking I would keep them in remembrance of him. Today in thinking of him I thought that such things would be particularly welcome to you, but regret that my search for them was unsuccessful. They have been mislaid in moving. I however send you some written in April, that you may possess some tokens of his official life. Please accept them & permit me to take the occasion to express to you my warmest deep sympathy at your irreparable loss, & offer my poor consolation. I am aware private grief (such as yours must be) must not be intruded upon. My great friendship for poor Channing – my unbounded admiration for him as a soldier, my high respect for his gentlemanly qualities, & his numerous virtues - My painful sense of his loss, that his welcome presence would never again be amongst us, is my only excuse. His loss is deeply felt by the Cavalry Division (of which he was a bright ornament) and unanimously mourned.' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. The letter is a bit light overall but still easily legible, and shows original mailing folds with notable splits thereto, repaired with archival tape to verso, otherwise in fine condition.
