Description:

FITZ JOHN PORTER
(1822-1901) Union major general who fought at Second Bull Run and Antietam. He was later accused by Pope of 'disobedience and disloyalty' and was relieved from command. An interesting A.L.S., 1p. 8vo. [Halls Hill, VA, Jan. 27, 1862], on the verso of a letter from Stephen W. Stryker, commanding colonel of the 44th New York Infantry. Stryker writes, in full: ‘Would it not be well if I could find out from the Deserter from my Reg caught today, where he got his pass and where he got his citizens clothing. I think by offering him inducement all could be found out. By that means we may be able to break up a traitors nest in Alexandria, and also in the army. The 14th Brooklyn Reg I hear sells passes for $3.' Porter replies, in full: ‘Your suggestion is a good one – but I would offer no other inducements than that you will use your influence to mitigate his punishment or cause him to be pardoned, if he furnishes the evidence of guilt of other partners you suspect. If he does this I assure you, the benefit will be appreciated and what you would expect in his favor will be granted if in my power and exertion to benefit him if beyond my power to act on his sentence.' He signs ‘F. J Porter' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘B G'. Shows original mailing folds and a pencil date at the top of Porter's response, otherwise in fine condition.
