Description:

Great-content collection of nineteen issues of the war-date BBC publication 'The Listener', each 4to., each approx.. 45-50 pp., containing a first printing of one of Winston Churchill's World War II-era broadcasts, all bound in red-cloth boards with gilt titles. Churchill's first broadcast begins "The British Empire and the French Republic have been at war with Nazi Germany for a month tonight", discussing the invasion of Poland and calling for Russian involvement in the war. In later reports, Churchill notably covers the breaking of the Maginot Line and the need to sink the French Navy; he reports on the initial American involvement in the war, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the creation of "the great alliance for free peoples"; he proclaims the victories in Alamein and in Italy, adding in his final issue after the surrender of the German forces: 'Advance Britannia! Long live the cause of freedom! God save the King!'. The issues are dated from Oct. 1939 to June 1945, and each issue is complete, including many other speeches and articles from British officials and reporters concerning the war. Fine condition.
