Description:

FERDINAND V AND ISABELLA I
King and Queen of Spain who ruled jointly from 1479 to 1504, they fought and expelled the Moors in 1492, established the Inquisition, and are best remembered for their financing of Columbus' 1492 voyage to the Americas. Rare, fine content manuscript D.S. signed by both as 'Yo el Rey' by Ferdinand and 'Yo la Reyna' by Isabella (as was their custom), 1p. 8.25 x 5.5 in., Tortose, Feb. 10, 1496 in Spanish. In full: 'The King and the Queen Licentiate of Villaescusa, our corregidor of the town of Valladolid: the reverend fathers in Christ, the bishops of Avila and of Salamanca, of our council, send the Licentiate of Vega and Master Andres de Osuna to proclaim the jubilee in certain parts of that bishopric. We command you that, in all matters in which you are requested concerning the said jubilee, you give them and their agents such favor and assistance as may be necessary for this purpose, in which you will do us pleasure and service. Given at Tortosa, on the tenth day of the month of February, in the year ninety-six. I, the King I, the Queen By command of the King and the Queen, Fernando de Zafra'. Trimmed at bottom, and excellent example in fine condition and ideal for framing. The 'jubilee' referred to almost certainly refers to Pope Alexander VI's granting the same year of the title of 'Catholic Monarchs' to Isabella and Ferdinand, strengthening their alliance with the Holy See. This era, closely following the 1492 completion of the Reconquista, marked a period of intense religious, political, and expansionist activity for Spain, including the consolidation of royal power and support for maritime exploration - including of course that undertaken by Columbus.
