Description:

CHARLES III
(b. 1948) King of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. Charles was born during the reign of his maternal grandfather, King George VI, and became heir apparent when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, acceded to the throne in 1952. Rare limited edition lithograph signed and dated at lower-right: 'C [19]91', 17 7/10 × 23 3/10 in. overall, Charles' 1991 painting entitled 'Balmoral Castle' printed by Curwen Studio, Chilford, on Somerset wove paper. Very fine condition, set into a very elaborate gold-trimmed and and frame. Of this work, Charles said: 'One thing I have discovered in the course of my painting efforts is that Balmoral Castle is marginally easier to paint than Sandringham House. Both seem to be peppered with turrets of various kinds and to boast the most complicated sorts of gables which defy my limited reserves of patience! But what I love about Balmoral, and this sketch was done in August, is the wonderful shadows. They, alone, made my painting finger itch, so I sat out in a field on three consecutive days at exactly the same time of day, being examined by some rather inquisitive Highland cows.' Extract from HRH Prince of Wales Watercolours (Little, Brown and Company, 1991)
